Speech Language Pathologist:


Why a Speech Language Pathologist?

Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) are trained to diagnose and treat communicative disorders. SLPs work very closely with children who have had repaired cleft palates, teaching them how to verbally communicate clearly and effectively. They may also conduct swallowing therapy.

How do I choose a Speech Language Pathologist?


There are three important aspects to look for when selecting a SLP:
  1. The therapist must consider the parent to be an intervention partner.
  2. The therapist needs to be experienced and knowledgable.
  3. The therapist needs to be child friendly.

Audiologist:


An audiologist works with people with hearing impairments. Audiologists often work with children whose hearing has been affected by cleft palate.

Why an audiologist?

  1. Hearing screens
    • Hearing screens are done to find any hearing disorders
  2. Treatment plans
    • Once a problem is found a treatment plan is then developed to help better your child's wellbeing.
  3. Continual monitoring
    • Having regular appointments with an audiologist will help eliminate any developing problems. The quicker a problem is found, the quicker it can be solved.




Orthodontist:

An Orthodontist can help align your child's teeth and jaw to their proper position, allowing them both to function correctly.

Why an Orthodontist?

  1. An assessment can be done to decide whether or not your child needs braces.
  2. Placement of braces (if needed)
  3. If applicable, the placement of your child's braces will ultimately give your child a healthier smile.



Plastic Surgeon:

Plastic Surgeons are reponsible for reconstructing and repairing parts of the human body.

Why a Plastic Surgeon?


  1. A plastic surgeon repairs the cleft palate.
  2. A plastic Surgeon can and will operate on child to help him/her better their appearance.
  3. After your child's operation, feeding habits will become more normal and they will be able to eat solid food instead of pureed foods and liquids.

Home Health Nurse:

A home health nurse will be great for care in your home. He/She will be there to assist you with activities of daily living.

Why a Home Health Nurse?

  1. A home health nurse will be there to assist you with your child's feedings.
  2. He/She will be there to monitor your child's health throughout the day.
  3. He/She will report how your child is doing with feedings and recovery after procedures to your Cleft Palate Team.


Peditrician:

A pediatrician is a children's doctor in which any and every child must see on a regular bases.

Why a Pediatrican?


  1. With your child's condition, he/she is more prone to infections and illnesses. Your pediatrician can and will treat and help you to keep your child from becoming ill.
  2. Your child's pediatrician will monitor his/her overall growth and development.
  3. They may recommend the specialist that they feel will serve you and your child best.
